Cobbler Mountain Cellars

OWNERS: Jeff and Laura McCarthy Louden

LOCATION DESCRIPTION: Delaplane has the typical Virginia countryside with rolling hills, it’s very picturesque.

TASTING ROOM DESCRIPTION:  The tasting room is very modest but eclectic. When you enter, there is a tasting bar where you may try the wines they are offering for the day produced by Cobbler Mountain Cellars. The back room is where the real fun begins with the cider tastings.

MY RIDE ALONG (My side-kick for this visit): Mark is my best happy-hour buddy so it only makes sense to bring a fellow lush on this visit.

TASTING FEES: Their “Whole House” tasting was $8 and included both wines and ciders

POURERS: Laura poured our wine, Brian poured the cider

Cobbler Mountain Cellars CidersTHE TASTING: My first cidery – I’m so excited! They only had 2 wines available that day, one was good, the other “meh”, but the ciders, as you will see below, were amazing! There are no tasting sheets because they’ve gone green <applause> but I was allowed to take photos of the sheets and they are at the very end of the article. While we were tasting, Brian’s mom and dad came in. Brian’s mother is the picture of bad peer pressure – she recommended mixing the Maple Stout and Kickin’ Cinnamon ciders. This lovely, albeit evil, influence is going to hell and I will meet her there with a pack of each cider. Thanks, Brian’s mom!

The following represents a 1-5 scale with What the fuck? being the worst and Oh, hell yes! being the best.
The W-I-N-O tasting scale (the M is silent because who cares about the Ms?)
[W] – What the fuck?
If I won’t drink it, it’s fucking bad because I’ll drink anything.
[I] – I’ll pass.
Not good, but not dumped. That would be wasteful.
[M] – Meh.
It’s whatever.
[N] – Now we’re getting somewhere!
This is a goodie. I may have bought it, or it might not be worth the money, or I’ve already spent too much.
[O] – Oh, hell yes!
I probably bought this one.

Here we go, the Cobbler Mountain Cellars wines and ciders – please remember, these are just my opinions …

Vidal Blanc (Wine)
This one is so unique, it’s a bit effervescent. Can you say “mimosas”? It would be a goodie for sangria too.
Rating [N] Price $21
Petit Verdot (Wine)
It’s … whatever. Can we just go taste the ciders now? Yes? Rock on!
Rating [M] Price $28
Jeffersonian Cider
They use Red and Golden Delicious apples from Rinker orchard. I have no clue who the Rinkers are or why this is an important fact. Can someone tell me? Anyone?
Rating [M] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Mountain Top Hop
PINE! I love pine trees [sigh]. This one is made with apples and Cascade dry hops. It’s fucking delicious!
Rating [N] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Wild Blackberry Hop
Oh man! Do you love blackberries? This one is full of flavor, unlike some where the berry flavor is cooked out or otherwise lost. I am not surprised that this is their best seller because these delicious liquid blackberries are going home with me tonight!
Rating [O] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Original Honey
It’s really subtle at first, but be patient grasshopper, the honey hits you big time at the end.
Rating [N] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Jammin’ Cranberry Ginger
Such an interesting combination. This is really fun!
Rating [N] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Kickin’ Cinnamon
It smells like apple pie and if heaven has a flavor this is it. And then … they served it warm. DEMONS! There is no hiding your “O” face when you taste this cider warmed. If it gives me an “O” face I have to buy it, yes I did.
Rating [O] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Harvest Pumpkin
This reminds me of a pumpkin-scented candle, the flavor is WOW! I am totally loving the cider experience.
Rating [N] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk
Maple Stout
Okay, that does it. These people are just a bunch of crack-in-the-form-of-cider dealers. This Maple Stout reminds me of pancakes, and who doesn’t enjoy a pancake-carb coma from time to time? You must try this! It came home with me, maybe I’ll have it for breakfast.
Rating [O] $18 – lg btl
$20 – 4-pk

Cobbler Mountain CellarsSUMMARY:
I had been hitting the wineries hard, but it was time for a change. Cider is very different from wine because the berries, spices, and other flavors don’t have to compete with grapes. The only downside here are their prices – $20 for a 4-pack ($18 for a large bottle) is quite high when you can go to a local store and get a 4 or 6-pack of craft-made beverage for $10. I understand production, marketing, distribution, blah blah blah, but still – $20 is kinda high. That being said, clearly it was not so high that I didn’t splurge on a 4-pack to take home, but I’m certain I would have bought a case had it been more affordable. Cobbler Mountain Cellars ciders are 6.8%-7% ABV which is a nice volume for something so sweet and easy to drink. There are only about 17 cidermakers in all of Virginia so treat yourself and take a little road trip to Cobbler Mountain Cellars, you won’t be disappointed … but of course, that’s just my opinion! 😉
